Scrap Metal Recycling For Cash During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Things To Know

If your workplace shuts down due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, you may be looking at new ways to make some extra cash to get you by. Metal recycling centers will likely remain open for business and will likely still be paying cash for recycled metals. Therefore, you do have the opportunity to make some extra money to get you by. However, collecting and recycling scrap metal during a national pandemic can look a bit different than usual, and there are some precautions to take. Here is a look at a few things you should know.

Scrap metal may be easier to source since more people will be home.

When you are looking for scrap metal to collect, it is important to reach out to people who may have scrap pieces hanging around on their property. From old appliances to old tin cans in a trash pile, all of this metal can be recycled. But, it is imperative to get permission to retrieve it. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, many people are at home because non-essential businesses are closing. Therefore, you should have an easier time just driving around and knocking on doors to find metal pieces you can take to the recycling center.

Scrap metal pricing may decline due to lacking demand.

As more large-scale production facilities shut down across the country to keep the spread of the illness contained, the demand for some scrap metals may go down. For example, in March of 2020, Boeing shut down its Washington state facilities instead of the looming illness to protect employees. If many places follow suit, the demand for metal can sharply decline because many of these companies utilize metals that have been recouped through recycling processes. Keep in mind, however, that the prices will likely gain traction again once the facilities get back to work.

Protecting yourself while handling metals from people will be important.

Social distancing has been recommended, which means it would not be wise to go out and shake hands with a hundred people while trying to secure free metal. Make sure if you are planning to go out and hunt for scrap metal that you continue to follow safe practices in the process. Avoid directly shaking hands with anyone who gives you metal, wear gloves, and keep your distance from individuals in general.
